A Tribute to Jose Fernandez

Jose Fernandez was a 24-year-old Miami Marlins Pitcher in the MLB. He was recently killed in a boating accident off the coast of Miami Beach. Fernandez was a Cuban baseball player who had to leave his home country at the age of 15 to achieve his dream.

A little after 3:15 on Sunday, September 25, 2016, Coast Guard officials found his 30-foot boat flipped upside down on the north end of a rocky, near the entrance of the Miami Harbor. Along with Fernandez, two other bodies were discovered, one on the rocks and the other two were in the water. In regards to the privacy of the other two men, their names are being held until relatives are notified.

Fernandez was a big part of the Miami Marlins and was beloved by his whole team and most MLB fans. He had outstanding stats which show when you see his 2.86 ERA, 182.1 innings pitched, and 13 home runs throughout the 2016 season.

I feel that Fernandez deserves a real tribute. He was a legendary pitcher in the making. On the pitcher’s mound on the Marlins field, a memorial was put together. I personally liked Fernandez, even though I don’t watch baseball much, but he had to be one of the best all-around baseball players of this era.

Organized Madness #2

Written: 9-29/16

To preface this, I will say it once again (as I did at some point in the last 12 lunar cycles) that I do not have a strange, unnatural inclination towards, nor fixation/obsession with, parentheses. I see you’re here again, reading this. Or maybe you’re new and don’t know what you’re getting yourself into. Both of which are good. In either case, welcome. Welcome to the zanier side of the newspaper, where the sarcasm flows like rivers. (more…)

Sports @ NEAAAT

After two meetings with many parents, students, and staff members fully engaged Julie Tunney, and the distinguished board of parent and student representatives has decided to move on with what almost 75% of the school wants. These meetings were put in order to talk about the possibility of having sports here at NEAAAT. After many considerations, and careful thought processes the group of representatives has come up with a way to have a step stool foundation on having sports at NEAAAT. (more…)

Symera Hall Sensation

Right next to the NEAAAT building, Moore Hall!

If you’re wondering, Symera Hall is the building right next to the (regular) NEAAAT building with all the boxes and people. Do you know why those people and boxes are there? Well, the answer is that they’re restoring and sanitizing the building so some of the future grades at NEAAAT can move into the building when they come here. Don’t get too excited though (I don’t know why you are), this isn’t confirmed yet and maybe they’re just going to use it for an event or maybe it’ll come back and connect with the regular college campus once more. In my opinion, it’s cool how they’re talking old buildings and giving them a new purpose.

Here’s a little history about the building: Symera Hall was built in 1912 and is believed to be the second-oldest structure on the ECSU campus. Originally for women students, its normal capacity was 99 people before going out of service. It was rebuilt in 1949 following destruction by a hurricane, then had several renovations. Symera and Lane Hall are connected by a small area formerly known as the “Captain’s Cabin”, then a faculty dining area. The building is named after Symera Moore, wife of the first ECSU leader, then president, Peter Moore. This building has a lot of interesting history I didn’t know until now! So, here’s a question. Do you think they should make it a part of this school? Or should they leave it to rot like before?

Ask Athena #1

My boyfriend is an antisocial person but I’m not and sometimes it becomes a problem, I’m not sure what to do. He doesn’t really talk to me during school, but when we aren’t in school he’s completely different. How do I tell him that I want him to talk to me more? – _Help_

Dear, _Help_

Seeing as you’ve come to me, I’m guessing you’ve already brought this problem to your boyfriend. If not, this is the first thing you should do. It’s hard to solve a relationship problem if only one person in the relationship knows about it. If he only talks to you after school it might be that he’s uncomfortable talking to you about other people. This could be a fear of criticism or scrutiny. In other words might be afraid that your friends will pick him for talking with his relationship partner which sounds silly that it happens. When telling him you want him to be more social, ask him after school. Since based on what you’ve told me he’ll be more comfortable. Hopefully, he’ll confide in you and you both can talk it out and find a solution.

P.S. Keep in mind that the solution may not be something you completely agree with, but relationships are all about compromise.

Love, Athena
